“In 1492 Columbus Sailed the Ocean Blue”.
I heard this poem all through school and believed
that good old Christopher was a great explorer,
trader and discoverer and that’s why we have a
national holiday and celebrate him. The first
Columbus Day celebration in the United States was
held in New York on October 12, 1792. Well as
most things go this was pretty much a lie. Why are
we still celebrating this guy?
He never got to the actual land mass of what we
now call the United States. Christopher thought he
was going to Asia and ended up in the Caribbean
Sea. In 1937, under pressure from the Knights of
Columbus; an influential Catholic group Franklin
Delano Roosevelt and Congress proclaimed October
12th to be Columbus Day, a national holiday.
Here are some other things about Columbus you
probably didn’t know:
•Columbus did not discover America.
•You can’t discover a continent with millions of
people already living on it.
•The Vikings were reported being there around 500
years earlier.
•He kidnapped Native Americans and sold them into
slavery.
•He killed roughly half the population of Haiti.
•Columbus was self-centered, ruthless, greedy,and a racist.
•Columbus did not prove the world was round.
•Columbus didn’t find a short cut to Asia, as he
set out to do, he was lost.
Now that people have woken up a little more there
have been some changes regarding Columbus Day.
Berkeley, California replaced Columbus Day with
Indigenous Peoples Day
and now South Dakota
started calling the holiday Native American Day.
Sweet Alabama
is celebrating Columbus Day and
American Indian Heritage Day, and Hawaii now
calls
it Discovery Day.
You would think that congress
would wake up gracefully and change the name.
Washington, DC honors and celebrates the
achievements of Christopher Columbus
each year
with a national wreath laying ceremony on Columbus
Day.
I can hardly believe we are still celebrating
this chump’s day. Yet it remains a federal
holiday. Now that you have a noggin full of new stuff about
Christopher Columbus and his band of ruffians, how
are you going to celebrate Columbus Day this year?
I know what I will do. I’ll have a Native
